Sativa, Indica, Hybrid: Understanding Cannabis for Everyday Users
Through the lens of the average consumer and traditionally speaking, cannabis has three main classifications that distinguish the plant's physical and chemical characteristics. Sativa plants are typically longer and have thin leaves, whereas Indica plants are shorter and stockier with wider leaves. Lastly, hybrid plant characteristics depend on the sativa/indica parents.
However, due to a lack of education and the influence of marketing initiatives, these classifications for physical attributes have now shifted towards describing the effects of the plant. Sativa is generally known for inducing sociability, a head-high, and enhancing creativity, while Indica, often marketed as "in-da-couch," is associated with sleep and relaxation.
The problem with this approach is that there is more to the chemical composition of the plant that contributes to the effects experienced by an individual strain.
The primary elements contributing to the "high" are the terpene profile, THC versus CBD percentages, consumption method, and desired effects. It's also important to note that cannabis can affect individuals differently, much like any other medicine. Factors such as cannabis experience, body size, body chemistry, and tolerance level all influence how the plant affects someone.
